“Excellence is not a skill. It’s an attitude.” (Ralph Marston) When people think about the National Honor Society (NHS), they think of someone with good grades and a good GPA. However, as Mrs. Jones, Wheatland chapter advisor, puts it, “The National Honor Society is about empowering and equipping students with the knowledge and skills to be leaders in their schools, community, and beyond.” An attitude of excellence will empower students with the confidence that leadership requires.

How does being an NHS member benefit a student? For one, it will look good on both a college application and a resume. But NHS is also about having the personal mindset to be your best self. It entails having the ability to act as a leader and being able to take a risk and impact the people and world around you. For now, only juniors and seniors can apply to be an NHS member.

Mrs. Jones has planned for the NHS chapter to become more involved in the school and community. She has also been thinking about doing a Junior National Honor Society for seventh, eighth, and ninth graders. “Exciting things are to come,” said Mrs. Jones, which has us excited to see what she has up her sleeve.

The current members of NHS are Delaney Dickenson, Owen Kenig, Justine Park, Katie Taylor, and Miranda West. Graduated members included Tyler Dampier, Katie Meyers, Kaleigh Gautieri, James Burnett, and more. Both current and past members demonstrate excellence through hard work and determination with a positive attitude.  The results of their attitudes include awards they’ve worked hard to earn in and out of the classroom, a compassion for other students, and an ability to share their skills with others, so that others might also be successful.

NHS is an important part of high school experiences because it allows students to develop leadership skills, build an excellent attitude, and impact the world around them.
