Both the Wheatland Mules and Lady Mules will be playing in District Championships this week. The Lady Mules defeated Stoutland 49-40 in the District Semifinals, while the Mules handled Macks Creek 77-43 behind Nathan Sawyer’s 10 threes.
The Lady Mules (20-8) will take on the top seeded Macks Creek Lady Pirates (23-3) tonight at 6:00 right here in Mule Country. The Lady Pirates and Lady Mules have met up three times this season, the Pirates taking two out of three. All three games were nail-biters. In the first matchup, Macks Creek won 57-49 in the Hermitage Tournament championship. But the Lady Mules got the best of Macks Creek in the next game, winning 39-37 in the Osceola Tournament semifinals. Macks Creek won the last matchup 56-50. Every game has been extremely close up to this point, and tonight shouldn’t be any different.
The Mules (19-8) will travel to Macks Creek to take on the St. Elizabeth Hornets (16-12) on Saturday at 6:00. This will be the first time these teams meet up this season. Both teams seem to be playing their best basketball of the season heading into this game. The Mules scored a season-high 77 points in the semifinals. The Hornets scored a season high 96 in their quarterfinal game vs. Tuscumbia. St. Elizabeth lost in the Class 1 State Championship a year ago, falling to South Iron. Both teams have had very successful seasons and are very evenly matched, so this will be a good one.
It’s an exciting time at Wheatland High School. Both basketball teams will be playing in District Championships over the next two days. Seasons will be on the line. Make sure to come out and be loud to root these teams on.
