Track season is nearing an end, and district time is approaching quickly. The Wheatland track team has had a very good season, but what events does each of the athletes do? Let’s go over what events everyone does and how successful they have been throughout the year.

Let’s start with Hannah Claunch. Hannah runs in the 100 meter hurdles race. One hundred meters is 1/4 of the way around the track, and the race includes 10 hurdles, with one set up every 8.5 meters. Hannah set her PR (personal record) earlier this season at Warsaw at 21.03 seconds, which was good for a 6th place finish. She has come very close to setting the school record this season, and will look to do it in a later meet.

Macy Pearson runs in the 300 meter hurdles race and in the 3200 meter race. 3200 meters is 8 laps around the track, or two miles. Macy set the school record at Warsaw in both of these events, finishing the 300 meter hurdles in 54.99 seconds and the two mile race in 13 minutes and 42 seconds. These times were both good for 1st place finishes at Warsaw, as well as personal records for Macy.

Ivy Rusk competes in the 100 meter and 200 meter race. 100 meters is 1/4 of the way around the track, while the 200 meter is half a lap. She finished the 100 meter in a solid 16.76 seconds, and the 200 meter at 36.52 seconds at Warsaw. She has continued to improve and work hard throughout the season.

Kate Murphy competes in two field events: javelin and discus. Javelin is exactly what it sounds like, throwing a javelin as far as you can. Kate threw the javelin 26.95 meters at Warsaw, and the discus 22.39 meters. She finished 2nd and 3rd respectively in those competitions and has consistently finished top 5 this season.

Dan Murphy throws the javelin and discus as well, same as his younger sister. At Warsaw Dan threw the javelin 38.38 meters and finished 6th. He threw the discus 37.83 meters, which was good for a 1st place finish in the Warsaw meet. Dan will look to do some damage in districts.

Robert Iniguez runs in the 2 mile and 800 meter races. 800 meters is 20 laps around the track. while the two mile is 8 laps. At Warsaw, Robert set his personal records in both of these events. In the two mile race, Robert finished in 12 minutes and 58 seconds, which was good for a 4th place finish. In the 800 meter, Robert finished in 2 minutes and 26 seconds, which also gave him a 4th place finish.

The Wheatland track and field team has gotten better throughout the season and is looking to make a lot of noise in the district meet in a couple of weeks. The district meet will be held on May 4th at Skyline High School.
